How to turn an HTML file into a website

An HTML file becomes a website when other people can open it. Double-clicking the file only opens it on the device where it is saved. This page is how to go from that file to a web address.

Why it works for you and for nobody else

Your browser is opening a file from your own disk. The address is a folder path, or it starts with file://. There is no road from the internet to your laptop. Closing the laptop closes the page.

Turning the file into a website means putting a copy where the internet can reach it, and giving that copy a web address. The padlock on that address is the secure connection. You do not install it yourself.

From the file to a web address

  1. Find the file. It ends in .html or .htm. If you were given a folder of files, zip the folder. Leave out old photos and videos that do not belong on the page.
  2. Upload it for a free check. Drop it on Pristan. We read the page and list what is missing, in plain words.
  3. Let us fix the usual gaps. The cookie question, the legal pages and the page title are the ones an assistant most often leaves out.
  4. Choose the web address. It can be a preview address first, then one you own, such as rosas-jam.com. People type that address. The page also works on phones.

You do not set up a server

Hosting is the service that keeps the page on the internet. That is what putting the website online means here. You do not rent a machine, and you do not edit technical records, unless you already own a web address and choose to connect it.

Questions people ask

The HTML file opens on my laptop. Why can my customers not see it?

Because the file is on your laptop. Upload it, and we put a copy on a web address. Send people that address, not the file.

Do I need to buy hosting?

You need the website to stay online. On Pristan that is the Website plan, €12 every month, cancel any time. The check itself is free. You do not buy a separate server.

Can I use a web address I already own?

Yes. You can connect it. You keep owning it, and you can move it away any time.

Will the page work on a phone?

Yes. People open the web address in the phone's browser. They do not install your HTML file.
